Aquamarine, garnet, kyanite, and the geologic story that put them here, kept by one collector with a notebook, a hand lens, and a healthy respect for closed ground.

Henson Creek Aquamarine Mine

Aliases: Vance Black Mine (mica era, 1944), Elbert's Aquamarine Mine (Watson, 1950), Pat's Garnet Mine (same complex). Avery County's only documented gem-beryl producer. Closed private ground — Ledford family ownership post-1991, no public digging. Preferred pin is the Vance Black MRDS record at 36.04399, −82.05204. The MAS “Elbert's” longitude of −81.88174 is a digitizer artifact from another decade; do not navigate to it. Specimens from the Ledford era still trade privately. Treat as private until Avery GIS and a current deed say otherwise.

The Mitchell_County_NC_Mineral_Sites.kml file is a working folder of prospects across the northern pegmatite belt: mica pits, alaskite road cuts, North Toe River gravels, and a couple of fee-dig references. Each pin carries its own access note. Read the placemark descriptions before loading the layer — the file mixes closed ground with public roadside collecting, and the difference is the difference between a good day and a trespassing charge.

Tiel Young Farm — Green Kyanite

Primary literature pin for green kyanite on the North Toe River, a few miles west of Spruce Pine. Joseph Hyde Pratt's 1898 American Journal of Science paper described grass-green kyanite in weathered mica schist with transparent crystals from 1×0.7 to 3.2×6 cm, some blue-centered with green margins, SG 3.64, originally worked by George L. English & Co. Kunz 1907 confirms. Pin is the North Toe at Double Island, ±7 mi W of Spruce Pine. Family anchor is the Thomas S. Young Cemetery on Double Island Road (35.9147, −82.2194). Aquamarine — gem beryl

Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈ · hexagonal · 7.5–8 Mohs

Blue to blue-green beryl, the named target at Henson Creek and most public Spruce Pine district fee grounds. Forms in late-stage pegmatite pockets where beryllium-bearing fluids cool in quartz cores. Look for hexagonal prisms with a glassy basal pinacoid, often striated along the c-axis. The 3-inch aquamarine in quartz matrix reported in the Henson Creek field notes is the upper end of what collectors actually find.

Golden beryl — heliodor

Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈ · same species, iron trace

Yellow to greenish-yellow beryl, secondary product at Henson Creek under Ledford-era production. Same crystal habit as aquamarine; the color comes from Fe₃⁺ in the channels of the beryl structure rather than the Fe₂⁺ of blue. Often zoned within a single crystal — a yellow core with a blue rim is a Spruce Pine district classic.

Almandine garnet

Fe₃Al₂(SiO₄)₃ · cubic · 7–7.5 Mohs

Deep red to brownish-red iron-aluminum garnet, the matrix workhorse at Henson Creek and Pat's Garnet Mine. Forms in the mica schist host rock and in the pegmatite selvage. ASU mineral museum's Avery garnet specimens are attributed here by collectors. Look for dodecahedral trapezohedra in micaceous matrix; broken surfaces show the conchoidal fracture that distinguishes garnet from the cubic cleavage of magnetite.

Green kyanite

Al₂SiO₅ · triclinic · 4.5–7 Mohs (anisotropic)

The Yancey County specialty: grass-green kyanite in weathered mica schist along the North Toe. Pratt's 1898 paper sizes 1×0.7 to 3.2×6 cm. Distinctive for hardness anisotropy — a steel needle will scratch across the long blade but skip along the side. Some crystals have a blue core with green margins, useful for teaching polarization in thin section. Specific gravity 3.64.

The original Vance Black product under Olson's 1944 rum-mica inventory, before Elbert Watson renamed the operation for aquamarine in 1950. “Rum mica” refers to the rum-colored cleavage faces, not the alcohol. Excellent basal cleavage into thin flexible sheets. Still abundant in the kaolinized saprolite fills of the old stopes; look for the books of clear to amber-brown mica in the soft white clay.

Quartz — the host

The matrix mineral of every gem pocket in the district. Smoky quartz is common in the pegmatite cores; milky quartz forms the bulk of the gangue. The productive aquamarine pockets at Henson Creek were described as gemmy blue beryl “in quartz matrix” — the quartz is what kept the beryl from being weathered free. Why the gems are here

A four-paragraph version of a six-hundred-page story. The Spruce Pine pegmatite district is one of the most studied mica-pegmatite terrains on Earth, and the reason there is beryl at all is the same reason there is kaolin clay and the same reason there is no oil.

The High Country of western North Carolina sits on the western flank of the Blue Ridge anticlinorium. The basement rocks are Grenville-age (1.0–1.1 Ga) gneisses and schists, repeatedly metamorphosed during the Taconic, Acadian, and Alleghanian orogenies. The country rock that hosts the pegmatites is a Proterozoic mica schist package, locally migmatitic, locally shot through with pre-Cambrian pegmatite. Most of the district's early mica production came from these older pegmatites; the gem-bearing ones came later.

Around 380–320 Ma (late Devonian to Carboniferous), a regional anatectic event produced a swarm of granitic intrusions and their pegmatite offshoots through the Spruce Pine district — Mitchell, Yancey, and the part of Avery County that includes Henson Creek. These are the alaskite bodies and the coarse pegmatites that anyone who has driven NC 226 between Spruce Pine and Burnsville has seen roadcutting through the hills. They are not gem-bearing everywhere; the chemistry has to be right.

Beryl is rare district-wide as an economic product. To grow gem beryl, a pegmatite needs beryllium in the melt (Spruce Pine pegmatites average only a few ppm Be, but a few ppm is enough at the right scale), a slow cooling history that fractionates beryllium into the late-stage pocket fluids, and a pocket geometry that lets those fluids concentrate without being lost to fractures. Aquamarine forms where the late-stage fluids carry iron in the +2 state and crystallize in the temperature window of roughly 400–600 °C at pressures near 2–4 kbar — upper amphibolite facies. Golden beryl forms in the same pockets but with iron in the +3 state, often zoned within a single crystal.

The reason there is kaolin clay in the Henson Creek saprolite is the same anatectic heat: feldspar alteration into clay minerals during long weathering in a humid climate after uplift. The reason there is no oil is that the Blue Ridge has never been deeply buried since the Paleozoic — no source rock maturation window, no reservoir traps. The mountain range is a fifty-million-year erosion surface in progress, and the rocks at the top of Roan Mountain today are the same rocks that crystallized a third of a billion years ago at five kilometers depth. We collect them at the surface because the mountains came down to us.

The Vance Black Mine shows up in Olson's 1944 NCGS Bulletin 43 under rum mica. By January 1, 1950, it had been renamed for aquamarine under Elbert D. Watson of Newland. Same mine, different commodity, different decade.

The MAS longitude for “Elbert's Aquamarine” (−81.88174) is shifted roughly 9.5 miles east of the real mine near Spear. Two MAS records sharing that longitude to five decimals is a spreadsheet digitizer artifact, not geology. Navigate to −82.05204 or stay home.

Avery County is named for Colonel Waightstill Avery, last colonial attorney general of North Carolina. The county seat is Newland — the highest county seat east of the Rockies. The Spruce Pine pegmatite district covers parts of three counties, and the gem pockets do not respect county lines.

Field craft

A short operating manual for actually going outside and coming back with something you can identify.

  1. 01 Own the deed question first. Land status — private, National Forest, state, municipal — is more important than mineralogy. The Avery County GIS online parcel viewer resolves more arguments than any field guide. National Forest hobby collecting under the 1964 regulations is a real thing; private ground is not. When in doubt, the answer is no.
  2. 02 Pack the right kit. Hand lens (10x is enough; 20x if you can hold it steady), steel nail, streak plate, dilute HCl for the carbonate test, magnet for the magnetite/grit check, notebook and pencil (pen skips on wet rock), paper bags for individual finds, chisel and three-pound hammer for the actual work, and a printed map because cell service drops out in the coves.
  3. 03 Read the dumps before you dig. The kaolinized saprolite at Henson Creek and similar pegmatites is a known weathering product; beryl weathers free of soft matrix. Surface float and the top meter of any dump deserve a slow pass with the hand lens before you start breaking anything. Many of the best historical finds came from working the pegmatite proper, but the surface sand is a free audit of what is actually on the property.
  4. 04 Label in the field. A specimen without a locality is a pretty rock; a specimen with a pin, a date, and a formation note is a research-grade data point. Wrap, label, repeat. Field card indexes beat memory every time.
  5. 05 Know the public alternatives. If the goal is aquamarine this weekend, the right answer is the Ray Mine in Yancey (Pisgah NF under USFS rules) or Crabtree in Mitchell (fee via MAGMA / Emerald Village). Henson Creek is the historical research pin, not the weekend plan.
  6. 06 Carry the periodic table. For the chemistry behind the species you collect — the beryllium in aquamarine, the iron in garnet, the aluminum in kyanite — the periodic table service on :8210 is a faster lookup than a field guide.
